Foreword by Sifiso Falala (PhD)
Language is the most important skill for us humans. It enables conceptualisation, visualisation and implementation of ideas. Language is a medium that facilitates thought, values and actions, and thus helps us to resolve everyday problems. A more precise and comprehensive language can help us achieve a more complex level of thought, and help us to solve stubborn problems by allowing us to see them more clearly.
Typically, the developing world is beset with stubborn problems which explains the protracted nature of development, implied in the term developing world.
Yet we know that language is nothing more than a collection of words, and combinations of words and word expressions. The English language is used universally. Yet sources of most of its words are from the western world. It is likely therefore that English, as it stands, is more efficient in resolving ideas, issues and problems that have a western identity more than those in the developing world. The Progressive Dictionary was launched in 2022 to supplement the English language so that it is just as efficient as a medium of thought and action in the developing world as it is in the developed world.
As language is arguably the most important medium of transforming society and of improving human harmony, the Progressive Dictionary has the potential to bridge the development gap between different nations that use English as a medium of communication, including its use in legislation and teaching.
English words that are already in the standard English dictionary are not included in the Progressive Dictionary.
The Progressive Dictionary is dynamic and evolving as it allows users to suggest new words for concepts that are, in their view, not accurately described by any one particular existing English word. Such words are submitted for consideration and adoption by the Progressive Dictionary. Users also benefit by accessing new words in the dictionary and from their ability to suggest concepts that do not have accurate words that describe them. The Progressive Dictionary considers all new words and concepts with a view to incorporating a final word that describes the idea or concept, and thus improve thought and communication precision, which improves society. Language by its nature cannot remain the same in a dynamic global society with different needs, histories and value systems. This is more sharply so given the disparities in global development.
The Progressive Dictionary represents an important milestone in the dynamism and effectiveness of English as a medium of human consciousness and change.
Our society is facing many damaging, cyclical challenges. All of them are due to an absence of appropriate vocabulary to describe them. We are motivating for the adoption of these new English words because they will contribute positively to development in Africa.
New words get added to the dictionary all the time. Bluetooth is one small example of a new word. Vocabulary is key for development, self analysis and for finding relevant solutions. Importantly, vocabulary should describe concepts that exist with sharp precision. As society changes old words fail to describe new phenomena.
Use these new words lavishly that we will be adding to the dictionary. What qualifies any word for inclusion in the common dictionary is it’s regular use with the same meaning. We have chosen a few words for now which if used regularly will pinpoint some areas where our society needs to develop. Our society cannot be described completely by words created by people who do not live in it.
Let’s promote the use of words that can help us describe our situation more accurately. Dictionaries grow all the time to serve society better. Let’s grow ours.
